Midtown tattoo artist suffers serious motorcycle injuries, community comes together to help

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – A Memphis tattoo artist left beaten, scarred and bruised is getting some much needed help from the community.

It was a busy Friday night at No Regrets Tattoo Emporium, but one of their star artists is missing. Joe Stamp is the father of one- year-old twin girls. In the tattoo industry he's known for his diverse designs.

But the 36-year-old artist has been at the Med since a devastating motorcycle accident Monday.

Shop owner Michael Crites says Stamp was on Southern Ave at dusk when he collided with a driver who didn't see him. There are multiple fractures to his spine, and he may lose part of his leg.

"You know, he's in a great deal of pain," Crites said. "The ankle, that's mainly the problem. His ankle was basically crushed between the bike and the car."

In addition to his injuries Stamp is facing another battle. He has no health insurance and will likely be off the job for months.

"So there's going to literally be no income coming into the family at this point, so that's why we're doing everything we can to try to raise as much money as possible," said Crites.

Crites and his colleagues have organized benefit concerts, art auctions and bake sales. They are donating their tips, selling t-shirts and prints, and set up online donation sites.

"This is family, you know," Crites said. "It's not just co workers at this point, you know?"

In addition to financial help for Joe Stamp, Crites is asking the public for something else: to be aware of people on motorcycles.

"If he had been in a car he'd have a couple bruises and he'd be eating dinner right now," said Crites.

The next benefit is scheduled for Saint Patrick's Day at the P and H Café on Madison.
