MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - We should learn more Monday about the officers involved and the man who was killed when police say he didn't drop his weapon when he was asked to do so.

Family members identified him as 62-year-old Horace Whiting. Police say just after 3 a.m. Sunday, police responded to call about an armed man near Mississippi and Danny Thomas Blvd.

When they arrived, they found Whiting in the area of East Georgia Ave. with a shotgun in his hands.

According to police, they asked him to put the gun down and instead, he fired a round. Officers then fired back, killing Whiting at the scene. Shortly after the shooting, family gathered at his mother's home - trying to get an understanding of the tragic turn of events.

"We all have our faults but my brother was a good good man," said Sharon Whiting, sister.

"He ain't never known to be no bad person, and carry no gun or do bad things to people," said Dorothy Tucker, neighbor.

Monday, a makeshift memorial sits in front of the spot where Whiting died. The family says Whiting had some mental illness, but did not deserve to die.

This investigation is still underway. No names of parties involved have been confirmed by police.
