Major road work planned for Elvis Presley Blvd.

(WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis is beginning one of the most ambitious neighborhood makeovers in years and it may mean a few growing pains in the process.

The intersection of Elvis Presley Boulevard and Brooks Road is preparing for some major changes as a massive construction project gets underway.

Dozens of orange construction barrels are already out as crews begin a $43 million project to improve the roadway.

This marks the initial phase of a five-year effort to spruce up the street that tourists like Robert Sawyer and his family take to visit Graceland every year.

"It don't take but one time going down that road to see how rough it is," said Robert Sawyer of Forrest, MS.

Road crews are planning to shut down the intersection at Brooks Road and Elvis Presley Boulevard from Friday evening until early Monday morning while the roadway is re-paved.

Utilities along the targeted area will be placed underground. Wider sidewalks, new traffic signals, crosswalks, bike facilities and landscaping are also expected. The improvements are aimed at boosting economic development in and around the area.

The construction work here will be paid for through a combination of state and city dollars.

The project is expected to be completed by 2018.
