Investigation into Mayor Greg Davis holding up funding for bike paths, walkways

(WMC-TV) – The state auditor's investigation into Southaven Mayor Greg Davis and city spending continues to hold up funding for bike paths and walkways. But the city's planner told Action News 5 that they're moving forward regardless.

Southaven was on track for almost a million dollars in state funds for the project until the auditor's investigation began. Financial support won't be cleared until it's over.

Bike routes in Southaven are slim pickings for Spencer Moore. The city is trying to fix that with a 25 mile project, but the Mississippi auditor's investigation into Greg Davis and city spending is putting state funding on hold.

"Anytime you have public money involved of course, we just simply want to make sure that it's managed properly," Northern Mississippi Public Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert said.

Tagert said holding the funds for a clean bill of health is policy. Until then, the city will move to another phase of the project by the hospital.

"They're for everybody who wants to get out of their car and get on a bike or get their tennis shoes on and run," Southaven Planning Director Whitney Choat said. "It's not for the politicians, so it is a little disheartening."

Tagert believes the project is a good idea and thinks MDOT will eventually be cleared to give the city the $850,000 to connect Central Park with Snowden Grove Park, but has to wait to get past the red tape, that he says isn't just from Davis.

"No no, our delay has nothing to do with the office holder. We are simply waiting on the annual audit with a clean bill of health," Tagert said when asked if the funds would be available in the event that Davis is not in office in June.

Davis said he hoped his case with the auditor should be finished by the June election. We'll continue to bring you the latest developments.
