Early morning fire destroys apartments

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused an early morning fire Saturday that forced four families from their Cordova home.

As the sun rose, many in the Camden Grove apartments in Cordova had not gone to bed.

Many were up most of the morning watching fire consume a apartment building across the street.

"They couldn't get out because their door was on fire," said neighbor Margaret Graves.

Shortly before 3 a.m., fire broke out at a apartment just off Houston Levee near Macon Road.

Neighbors said four families, including kids, lived in the four apartments.

"Big flames, they just kept coming no matter how much water they put on it and then firemen began breaking out the windows there," said Graves.

Many who lived there said when the fire broke out, neighbors ran out covering their mouths with their hands because the smoke was so thick.

Investigators said the building is more than likely a total loss.

The Red Cross stepped in overnight and they are providing shelter and other supplies for those four burned out of their homes.
