Plane takes off with Tigers on board

(WMC-TV) - The University of Memphis men's basketball team took off to Michigan Tuesday with one goal in mind -- to win on Thursday.

The team's first match could become a Tennessee showdown.

The Tigers had one last practice at the FedExForum Tuseday morning before making their way to the airport.

Coach Josh Pastner described the practice as "really good".

A handful of fans showed up to cheer to see the team off.

Wendell Davis has been rooting on the blue and gray since the Memphis State days.

"I didn't have to work. That was enough reason," said Davis about why he decided to watch the team depart.

The first to arrive was Mark Sharp, whose daughter is in the band.

"I think we're gonna go up and kinda stir up some stuff, you know," said Sharp. "I think we're gonna make some noise in Detroit."

The band joined the team on the plane, along with University of Memphis President Dr. Shirley Raines.

"Well we wanna win, of course. We wanna win," said Dr. Raines.

"We gotta win Thursday," agreed Coach Pastner.

Head Coach Josh Pastner describes this year as a heck of season.

"We gotta make shots. We make shots, I think we're a tough team to beat. Bottom line. If players make plays, we have a chance to go a far way," said Pastner. "I believe we're good enough to go to the final four, but you can't get to the final four if you don't win Thursday."

One game at a time, they say, though fans like Davis and even Dr. Raines hope there is more than one game this time.

Tigers fans will be firmly planted in from of the TV Tuesday night to see the St. Mary versus Middle Tennessee State game. Whoever wins the match-up will take on the Tigers on Thursday.
