Deputy broke arm, leg in motorcycle accident

(WMC-TV) - A DeSoto County sheriff's deputy was taken to The MED in a helicopter after a motorcycle accident Wednesday.

The deputy was initially reported to be in critical condition. He has since been upgrade to non-critical condition.

According to the sheriff's department, Mike Cowan was driving his motorcycle when he and another vehicle collided around 12:45 p.m. Details about what caused the accident and who was at fault have not yet been released.

Cowan broke an arm and a leg in the crash.

"He's going to be laid up for quite a while, he's got some pretty good gashes in his leg and in his arm," said DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco.

According to Sheriff Rasco, Cowan was on his way to get gas when the driver of another car pulled out in front of him.

"He was still moving, he was trying to get up, but we wouldn't let him up because we know he ain't supposed to get up like that," said Derrick Jones, who saw the crash.

Traffic was stopped for about 30 minutes as law enforcement from all over the Mid-South rushed to check on their fellow officer.

"It don't make a difference what color the uniform is or where it is, we're all one family and we're going to stick together and support each and everybody," explained Rasco, who says Cowan will make a full recovery.

He continued, "I can't say enough about Mike. He's in great physical shape and it's going to take him a while to get over this but we'll make it."
