Man arrested in connection with 2006 murder

(WMC-TV) - After years of searching and investigating, Memphis police finally have their man. A suspect is now charged in connection with the deadly shooting that started with a handshake in 2006.

The shooting happened in broad daylight.

Police say a handshake immediately turned into murder and the suspect got away with it for seven years.

Only graffiti resides at an old abandoned apartment building on S. Wellington Street now. That is where people packed the parking lot on June 27, 2006 when police say Keith Brown shot Marquez Thomas one week before his 23rd birthday.

According to homicide investigators, Brown walked up to Thomas, greeted him, and even shook his hand. Then he pulled out a gun and shot him four times.

Police say Brown sped away from the scene in a 2004 Chevy Tahoe and vanished for nearly seven years.

Now, he is locked up without bond at 201 Poplar, booked late Wednesday night on a first degree murder charge.

U.S. Marshals say they were tipped off that Brown was in Dallas, Texas, nearly 470 miles away living near the President George Bush Turnpike.

When marshals found him, they say he told them he "knew his time was up".

Brown will appear in court Friday.
