(WMC-TV) - The University of Memphis officially announced Wednesday that head basketball coach Josh Pastner accepted a contract extension.

Athletic Director Tom Bowen said Pastner will remain head coach for the long term.

"The process for creating a new long term agreement began months ago," said Bowen before introducing Pastner to the crowd that gathered at a 2 p.m. news conference.

Terms of the new contract have not been released. It must first be approved by both the school and the Tennessee Board of Regents.

"I'm very grateful to even be the head coach at Memphis. It's not a birth right to be able to be the coach at Memphis . It's a privilege and it's an honor. And I've been able to work with so many great people. We have great student athletes. Just tremendous coaching staff," said Coach Pastner. "But there's no question Tiger nation is phenomenal. I believe it's the best fan base in the entire country. There's nothing like it."

But Pastner said he cannot take credit for everything the Tigers accomplished this season.

"I can assure you that any credit to anything should go to, obviously to our student athletes because they're the ones who have done the job, in all areas, not only on the court and the arena but, most importantly, in the classroom and in the community," said Pastner.

He said recruiting should go well for the coming seasons and he is optimistic about the program's future, but remains focused on the next season.

"A lot to look forward to. The league, we're as healthy as we've ever been," he continued. "So much to look forward to going to next season. I think the fans should be ecstatic with the conference next year, I mean, our schedule and everything else, even in conference play, I can already feel the excitement from around the city."

Pastner has compiled a record of 106-34 and has taken his team to three NCAA tournaments in the four years he has been on the job.
