Alleged Walmart shoplifter shot by police officer

(WMC-TV) - Another officer involved shooting took place after an off-duty cop working security at Walmart tried to stop a man suspected of shoplifting. Now, two officers are suffering from minor injuries with the alleged shoplifter in critical condition.

"I think you have to take all of these incidents as separate and apart incidents," said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong during a news conference Thursday. "I don't think you can loop all of them together and say this one led over into this."

Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, an off-duty officer working Walmart security followed a man suspected of shoplifting out of the store. He flagged down two on-duty cops.

Police said as they tried to arrest him the suspected shoplifter fought back, spun, and reached for his waistband as if going for a gun.

That is when one of the three cops shot him once. Armstrong confirms there was not gun on the suspect.

Investigators said the man is at The MED in critical condition. The man's family declined to comment about the incident.

"We'll investigate it and we'll let the facts of the investigation speak for themselves," said Amstrong.

He said he would rather this topic not be so common, but also prefers his officers get home safely.

As a matter of routine, the officer who fired the shot is on leave during this investigation.

MPD has not released his name or that of the suspected shoplifter.
