Portion of downtown closed off for KKK rally

(WMC-TV) - Many downtown offices are observance of the Easter holiday, which could have made for a quiet weekend in Memphis, but now residents and tourists are wondering what else is to come since a KKK rally is scheduled to be held.

Diego Castellanos and Denise Benoit are tourists in town. They said their Saturday plans will take them elsewhere, outside boundaries containing a potentially volatile mixture.

Memphis Police will close down a huge chunk of downtown.

The boundaries stretch from Poplar Avenue to North Front Street, back down Jefferson Avenue and connecting back to Poplar on North 4th Street.

Police said no pedestrians, cars, or traffic will be allowed within.

"I think we'll be slow," said Jack's Food owner Tim Ahsan, whose restaurant is inside the boundaries.

Ahsan was in Memphis for the last rally in 1998. He is hoping for a better experience this year.

"We got broken window and get all the trouble," he said recalling the last rally.

MATA will detour some trolley lines until 6 p.m.

The KKK will rally at the courthouse. Police said counter protesters will be in a designated area at Jefferson Avenue and Adams Avenue.
