Hundreds brave rain for 'Heart of Memphis'

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - From barbecue to Elvis to an Easter Egg Roll, hundreds braved the rain to celebrate what makes Memphis a great place to live, work, and play.

Event participants did not want an outsider to come in and define Memphis. So those who love the Bluff City defined it for themselves.

"Born and raised here, so I love Memphis," said Memphian Ronny Kwan.

While the KKK was rallying downtown, an even larger crowd was celebrating what is good in Memphis. More than 1,500 people were in attendance.

"Let's not wait for the Klan to come here to do things like this. Let's let today be the start of dong this long-term," said event attendee Brad Watkins of the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center.

Sightings at Heart of Memphis included the Queen of Beale Street, an Elvis look-alike and the Peabody Duck Master.

"It's about diversity, it's about a rich community that has so much to offer," said event attendee and Methodist-LeBonheur Health Care CEO Gary Shorb.

This is the first time the city has held the Heart of Memphis celebration. But officials said with all the support from businesses in the community, this could turn into an annual event.
