Group provides clothing to elementary students

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Many families in the Memphis area live at or beneath the poverty level. Some have a hard time putting clothes on their children's backs, much less buying them school supplies.

An organization called Rhinos' Nation wants to help and adopted Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School.

Boxes of clothes, shoes, and other items poured into the school Monday.

Shortly after classes began, parents like Petrina Green were allowed to pick out what they needed for free.

"Actually I have three boys and sometimes it gets a lot to, like I say find clothes for my older son so this helps me with him," said Green.

The idea for the clothing giveaway grew out of a meeting between Very Hamilton and "Ms. Peggy" of Peggy's Healthy Home Cooking.

They heard about the large number of students whose parents cannot afford clothing and school supplies.

The community help group they belong to called Rhinos' Nation collected items from its members.

Hamilton says she knows what its like to want new shoes and clothing and not be able to afford them. That is because when she was an elementary student her family's income was listed below the poverty level.

Hamilton says their group's goal is to revitalize the community one person at a time.

The parents of students at Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School are grateful.

"These are nice clothes and I do appreciate the school for the clothes and things like that," added Green.
