(WMC-TV) - The police officer who shot and killed a 15-year-old boy resigned his position with the Memphis Police Department.

Terrance Shaw resigned in lieu of being terminated, according to the MPD public information officer.

Justin Thompson, 15, was shot by Shaw in September.

Shaw maintains the shooting was the result of a robbery attempt.

He was initially placed on leave following the deadly shooting.

In December, Shaw was allowed back to work in a non-enforcement capacity but he was suspended again shortly thereafter.

Shaw joined the Memphis Police Department in October 2007.

The shooting of Justin Thompson marked Shaw's fourth shooting incident since joining the force.
