Elderly Bordeaux woman awakened by break-In

An 85-year-old Bordeaux woman woke up to find a strange man in her bedroom early Wednesday.

According to Metro police, the victim, Katie Crutchfield, initially thought the intruder at her on Ogden Drive home was her grandson. When she realized it was not, the man ran away.

Metro police Capt. Ben Dicke said the man forced his way into the home through a back door, and once inside, the suspect stole a wallet from Crutchfield's purse in the living room.

Most people in the neighborhood know the victim as "Ms. Katie" or "Ms. Crutchfield." Years on her street has earned her a lot of respect.

So, you can imagine how upsetting it was for many to hear someone broke down her back door as she slept.

"What he was after was the money," Crutchfield said. "I was going to fight or do whatever I could do. I was going to run him out of the house, so he ran out of the house himself."

Crutchfield immediately called 911, and police and her family soon arrived.

"I do not want to say it on camera, because I would probably have to be censored. I'm so angry," said granddaughter DeWayna McMillan. "How could they do this to a senior citizen?"

In the aftermath, the family called in an alarm company and a crew to fix the broken windows.

"If he comes back, he'll be in a bad shape," Crutchfield said.

They all want to help this woman enjoy a well needed full night of sleep.

"We grew up, she said, 'I've got my pistol. I've got my gun. If somebody wants to get in here with me, they might not make it out.' But then she'll always put the church twist on it - 'God's got me, too' - but she's always one of those people that's going to make sure that she's okay," McMillan said.

Police don't have much to go on in terms of a suspect description.

Crutchfield did tell investigators the burglar wore some sort of green mask over part of his face.

If you know who it might be, call Metro Police.
