Memphis Fashion Week grows in popularity

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Models are preparing to hit the stage for the 2nd Annual Memphis Fashion Week. Since the first year was such a success, organizers wanted to give more local talent a chance to showcase their designs.

Tara Skelley always loved fabrics, prints, and creating her own designs, but had no idea what to do from there.

"I'm actually an accountant. So, this is a total different side of the brain," said Skelley.

It is creative minds like Skelley's that the folks behind Memphis Fashion Week want to nurture. Along with 14 others, she has been given coaching and resources.

"The rest was just learning as you go, learning the hard way, making mistakes, getting things wrong, and starting over," said Skelley.

Now it is show time.

Backstage, the designers are dressing their models and prepping their designs. And men should not feel left out, men's lines will be featured, too.

The show is fun for spectators while at the same time putting Memphis in line with other cities that have been doing this for years.

"A lot of designers that are from here had to leave to start their lines and build their collections and we want them to be able to stay here," said Abby Phillips, Memphis Fashion Week.

Although this is only the second year for Memphis Fashion Week, it is already getting a lot of attention, including a spot in Southern Living magazine.

Memphis Fashion Week is Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. in the Cadre Building downtown. General admission tickets are available 45 minutes prior to the show.
