Outstanding warrants taken care of in Southaven

(WMC-TV) - People from across the Mid-South are taking advantage of Southaven's Operation Safe Surrender program, which gives people the chance to pay fines to avoid jail time.

Until Monday, Edward Reliford avoided Mississippi because of an outstanding warrant.

"You worry about getting pulled over, going to jail," he said when he came back Monday to wipe his slate clean on his $800 bill.

Reliford is one of 1,400 offenders who can pay half of their outstanding fines and make payment arrangements for the remainder later for contempt of court or probation violations. The option is only available for two days this week.

"I thought it was a trick to get me down here and lock me up because I owed the money from last year and I had not paid nothing in about 18 months," explained Reliford. "I thought it was some kind of trickery thing and I was scared to come down here."

Reliford is from Memphis.

Police estimate around 70 percent of people with outstanding warrants live outside of Southaven and they hope to recoup thousands of dollars in overdue fines this week.

Southaven Municipal Court will be open Monday until 7 p.m. But offenders can also go on Thursday from noon to 7 p.m.
