WASHINGTON, D.C. - (WMC-TV) - A celebration of Memphis Soul music took place at The White House Tuesday, starting with a "Soulsville USA: History of Memphis Soul" workshop hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The workshop started at 10 a.m. and 120 middle and high school students from across the country (and Memphis) were invited to take part.

"Memphis, Tennessee is the birthplace of both Elvis Presley's rock and roll and B.B. King's blues. And while you can hear both of those influences in Memphis soul, this music has a style and a story uniquely its own," said First Lady Michelle Obama.

Executive Director of The GRAMMY Museum was introduced by the first lady. He taught students about the origins of Memphis Soul, and discussed important artists throughout its history and the elements that helped contribute to the sound.

Five musicians sat on a panel to answer questions during the workshop.  Those included Sam Moore, Mavis Staples, Justin Timberlake, Charlie Musslewhite, and Ben Harper.

Some of those musicians who will be playing at 5:55 p.m. include Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Al Green, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader.

Action News 5's Joe Birch and Lauren Squires are there and will bring you live reports and exclusive photos from the events.
