$800k at stake in Lang custody battle

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The custody battle for the children of fallen Memphis police officer Martoiya Lang was back in court Tuesday.

Lang was shot and killed in the line of duty last year. Now, her mother and estranged husband are fighting for custody of her four girls.

Day four of the custody hearing proved to be long and painstaking.

The testimony centered on how the children are coping now that their mother is gone and how they were before her death in December.

Lang's mother, Vivian Taylor, wants custody of the girls, while Lang's estranged husband, Darius, wants the three he fathered.

Darius' father, Lovie Lang, spent the day on the stand. He said he never saw his son beat Lang or drink excessively.

He said when Lang was alive, she kept the children from his son and her mother continued doing that after Lang died.

Lovie said Vivian Taylor turned one of the girls against them.

Besides the three girls, he confirmed Darius Lang has two children from his current girlfriend and now, another woman says she had another child with Darius Lang.

The judge lit into Lovie Lang about whether the living arrangements will be conducive to three more children.

Not only do the children have a $300,000 trust fund from money raised by the community, Lang also had a $500,000 death benefit. That means there is $800,000 at stake.

A psychologist also took the stand. He said Darius Lang does not suffer from any major disorder, but said he is self-centered and has a tendency to not empathize with others.

The custody hearing will continue Wednesday at 1:15 p.m.

Action News 5's Kontji Anthony will be there.
