2-year-old who drowned in pool identified

(WMC-TV) – A 2-year-old drowned Wednesday when Memphis police say he fell into a backyard pool while his mother was asleep inside.

Family members were too upset to speak about what happened at their home on the 4700 block of Rolling Meadows around 5 p.m.

According to a police report, the mother of two twin boys fell asleep for about 30 minutes and when she woke up, she noticed both toddlers were missing. One of the boys was found right away, but Courtland Thompson was nowhere to be found.

Family members and police noticed a window screen partially removed, so they began searching outside. A relative found the Courtland in the swimming pull and pulled him out of the water.

A police officer performed CPR on the 2-year-old until paramedics arrived.

The boy was dead by the time he made it to Methodist-North Hospital.

Drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children under four years old. Experts recommend, among other things, proper fencing around pools and supervision.
