Bolton High School teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student

(WMC-TV) – A Shelby County high school coach has been accused of sexual misconduct with a student.

Wednesday afternoon school officials said Bolton High School teacher LaTorrence Bivens is not allowed back on campus, and Shelby County Schools are recommending he be fired after allegations from a parent.

Bivens was a math teacher and also an assistant football coach, but now he may be looking for a new job.

A parent came forward with allegations to the principal. An 18-year-old senior asked not to be identified, but told Action News 5 the allegations had classmates buzzing Wednesday.

"In classes after school, they were just talking about it," the student said.

Memphis Police are investigating an incident report, but charges have not been filed. The student we talked to described Bivens as a 'cool coach' and hadn't heard about the allegations until earlier in the day.

"It is innocent until proven guilty, but if it is true then I mean it hurts because I never thought of him in that way and I felt like I could come to him for anything," that student said.

In a statement to Action News 5, Shelby County Schools said,

"LaTorrence Bivens, a Math teacher at Bolton High School, has been recommended for termination of employment with Shelby County Schools following allegations of inappropriate conduct with a student. A parent reported the allegations to the principal, and the proper authorities were contacted immediately. The teacher was also removed from the classroom and is not permitted on campus."

Bivens has not been charged with a crime, but Memphis Police are working the case. Action News 5 reached out to Bivens on Facebook for his side of the story, but never heard back.
