Sheriff substation opens in DeSoto County

(WMC-TV) - A new substation is open in DeSoto County aimed at keeping its residents safer.

The new substation is located on the east side of the county in Olive Branch. It currently shares a building with a car dealership but it is fully operational and will aim to get help the sheriff's office respond quicker to that side of the county.

"The bottom line is the response time has been inadequate in Sheriff Rasco's eyes," said Dick Hackett, DeSoto County Sheriff's Department.

There is a lot of distance between the sheriff's office in Hernando and the east side of DeSoto County.

"Just traveling from here to Hernando back and fourth, that's an hour. You've wasted an hour," said Sheriff Rasco.

Citizens in the east part of the county will also benefit by not having to drive to the county seat to fill out a report.

"You can come in here and do anything you have to do at the sheriff's department," said Rasco.

The sheriff says it will cut back on vehicle wear and tear, as well as fuel costs. The substation will share space with Homer's Auto Car Dealership at a savings to taxpayers.

"It's not costing the county one penny," added Rasco. "They're paying everything. They pay the light, they pay the water, they pay the sewage; there's no rent for us whatsoever."

The sheriff says he hopes to eventually turn this into a fully functional precinct with other locations around the county.
