Olive Branch runner, family safe in Boston

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Kristopher Whitten is from Olive Branch, Mississippi and he is safe with his family at a Boston hotel after explosions rocked the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon.

Whitten is staying about four or five blocks from where those explosions happened near the finish line.

He tells Action News 5's Michael Clark that he finished the race about an hour and a half earlier.

He heard first responders from his hotel room, but was too far away to hear the actual explosions.

He and all the people in his hotel are being told to stay put until further notice.

"A guy just posted a sign that said if you don't have a room key you're not getting in," said Whitten. "So we were glad to see that."

Whitten says they have not heard of any runners from the Mid-South who suffered injuries.

Cell phone service is spotty but they are using the phone to check in with family, friends, and other runners.

"Just via telephone because like I say everyone's been told to stay put and you really cant get to anybody else, but remotely. Thank goodness for technology," he added.

A group called New Albany Runs out of New Albany, Mississippi reported they have heard back that everyone is safe from their area.

Another running group called Breakaway Running is checking on runners they know to be in Boston.  From everyone they have checked on so far, they have no Mid-South injuries to report.  They are still checking on runners.
