FedEx employees celebrate company's anniversary by giving back

(WMC-TV) -- FedEx vice president of environmental affairs Mitch Jackson is grateful for Frederick Smith, who created the company that employs him in 1973.

With hundreds of other FedEx employees, Jackson is giving back to celebrate the Memphis-based company's 40-year anniversary.

"This is one of 14 cities where FedEx team members are out working in the community with environmental restoration projects," Jackson said. "It's part of our volunteer and philanthropic activities that we have around our Earth Smart and environmental sustainability issues."

The outdoor break from express delivery in Memphis is taking place along the Wolf River.
Instead of handling 9 million packages a day, they're working with the Wolf River Conservancy.

Volunteers are building birdhouses, planting, and clearing underbrush.

"They're trying to help restore the native infrastructure that prevents storm water run-off and the like, because that contaminates the river," Jackson said.

Team members from FedEx Express, Services, Office, Ground and Freight know: in order for their company to thrive, so too does their community. They "absolutely, positively have to" do their part to make that happen, Jackson said.

"This is what FedEx is about. It's about solving and helping our customers with what they need, while being good corporate citizens in the communities...and this is...this is sustainability in action."
