MY TURN: IRS employees charged with fraud

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - This is the kind of story that just makes you crazy.

Twenty-four Internal Revenue Service employees working here in Memphis have been charged with fraudulently obtaining more than $250,000 in government benefits.

That's right. The people we taxpayers hired to keep us honest as we file our tax returns are accused of gaming the system in several different ways to steal our hard-earned tax dollars. They're accused of lying to obtain unemployment payments, food stamps, welfare and housing vouchers.

Of course, these people are innocent until proven guilty, but that did not stop the U.S. Attorney from describing them as brazen thieves. Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said these people have been gaming the system for months and years.

It's fairly universal that we gripe about having to pay taxes, but if our tax collectors behave like this, it's easy to understand why.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
