Residents confused after deadly shooting

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police search for a killer Wednesday after a 50-year-old man was shot to death in front of his home.

The shooting happened in the 1400 hundred block of Gausco Road in South Memphis Wednesday morning.

Witness said the crime scene was a tragic sight as a middle-aged man fell victim to an apparent homicide in the middle of the street.

"And then there was about four shots this morning, and I said 'Somebody got shot,'" said neighbor Ruth Caples.

Caples and several residents said they heard gunfire around 5 a.m. They found their neighbor outside on the ground next to his truck with a gunshot wound.

According to neighbors, the man left for work every morning around the time of the shooting.

"Man, this guy is going to be missed by a lot of people. You would be amazed how one person can affect so many people [in] their lives, and this guy he was one of them," said neighbor Kenneth Small.

"Residents said they cannot believe this happened. They said the man who died was well liked in this community. Neighbors are confused why anyone would kill him.

As the victim worked a regular job, he helped others on his block with lawn work or anything else they needed.

"Me and my neighbor, Miss Bolden, we sit down here crying. We go miss him. You know anybody that knew him would be feeling the same way," said Small.

Officers said this homicide is still under investigation, and they are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.
