Rain won't put a damper on downtown celebrations

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Downtown was quiet Friday afternoon but with even with pouring rain, the weather is not expected to put a damper on the celebrations happening Friday night.

Annette Koehler and her husband have been volunteering at Memphis in May for 30 years. They say it is the coldest they can remember, but they are not worried about the weather.

"The music fest is gonna go on no matter what," said Annette, who has some advice for people braving the weather for the event. "If you see signs that say 'Road closed', that basically means the road is closed."

There will be a lot of those signs along Riverside Drive, so officials say it is best to avoid that stretch of road if possible.

Annette had one more bit of advice, "If they're gonna come downtown, wear a lot of warm clothes and rain gear and umbrellas. It's gonna be cold."

At the FedExForum, fans are not worried about the Grizzlies playoff game.

"I think it's a must, we are gonna win tonight. I don't wanna go back to LA," said Grizz fan Chuck Hamlett.

Fans are buying up Grizz gear for game six of the first round playoff series.

The rain is not going to stop Memphis pride from overflowing downtown.

"It means a lot to the city. It really does," said Grizz fan Jimmy Dumash. "We'll be wet, we'll walk, and do whatever we have to do. We'll have a great time."

People heading downtown this weekend should leave early, expect delays, and be patient.
