Rainy weather puts a damper on kids' baseball season

(WMC-TV) - Many Mid-South parents are outraged after several of their kids' baseball games were canceled.

Heavy rainfall led to the cancellation of many games this season, but parents in Hernando are upset because they paid $90 per child to have their kids play at the Hernando Civic Center sports complex. Those parents want their money back.

In all, there are nine fields at the complex. But for a large part of the baseball season, those fields have sat empty due to standing water.

"We can't control the rain, I wish we could and we're as frustrated as everybody else," said Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson.

The City of Hernando took ownership of the fields over the winter.

City officials say it is their first year in the baseball business and they are doing everything they can to keep the fields in shape, despite the heavy rain.

"I understand if it's raining from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., you're not gong to play the next day. But there have been days when the sun has been out and shining the day before, and you're not playing," said parent and coach Robert Alliston.

Some parents say the city needs to bring on more help to get the fields back in shape.

Officials say there are only 16 games played here during the season. So far, they have had to cancel five or six games because the fields were muddy.

"We don't want a kid's foot to get stuck in the mud, go for a turn and have a twisted knee or ankle," explained Hernando Parks and Recreation Director Dewayne Williams.

Hernando's mayor is also an assistant coach at the complex.

"The fields are just wet and there's nothing we can do about it and we're asking everyone to be patient with us," added Mayor Johnson.

Many parents say they are running out of patience and hope the city schedules make up games on any night except church nights.

City officials want to reassure parents that they will definitely get their $90 worth of play on the baseball fields.

Officials are working now to reschedule those games for Wednesdays and Saturdays.
