MY TURN: Riverfront restaurant project falls through

(WMC-TV) - Not a good week for the Riverfront Development Corporation – that's the group charged with developing the Memphis riverfront including the Beale St. Landing project.

More than a year ago, the RDC chairman was bragging that Beale St. Landing's new restaurant was going to be so popular that you wouldn't be able to get in.

As of today, it turns out he was half right – not the part about being popular, but in fact, you cannot get in. The restaurant deal fell through.

It was already months behind the date RDC said that it would open. The project has been plagued with delays and bad press. Now, RDC has hit the Memphis City Council up for more money and that has the council and Mayor AC Wharton asking questions about RDC's $2.6 million payroll and its value proposition.

No one would argue about the need to turn our riverfront into an asset, but in a city like ours, every tax dollar needs to be spent wisely. That's not what people are saying about the money that's going to the Riverfront Development Corporation.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.

Why did Cracker Barrel fire Brad's wife? It's really no one's business, other than Brad's and his wife's, but that hasn't stopped people around the world from demanding answers after a Harrison County, IN, man publicly asked the restaurant chain why his wife Nanette was let go from her job at the Cracker Barrel in Corydon.
