Southaven mayor speaks about upcoming trial

(WMC-TV) - Southaven Mayor Greg Davis is talking about his trial coming up next week. This comes after many of the aldermen were voted out of office in Tuesday's election.

There was talk of a possible settlement during the first part of this trial, but it is set to continue on Monday in Jackson, Mississippi.

The civil case against Mayor Greg Davis centers around the state auditor's effort to collect more than $70,000 in public money allegedly spent on personal matters, such as trips, shopping, even marriage counseling.

Davis paid back $96,000 of the original $170,000 the state claimed he owed.

Davis believes additional information presented next week will prove the remainder was spent legitimately, with permission by the Board of Aldermen.

"Both sides agreed to an order that every penny was approved by seven aldermen," said Mayor Davis. "It's not like I went down and wrote myself a check. There wasn't anything I was reimbursed for that seven people didn't vote yes for."

Alderman Ronnie Hale and others testified during this first part of this trail in January.

Several other city officials are expected to take the stand next week.

The trial continues in the midst of Davis's reelection bid as an independent candidate.

The general election is June 4.
