MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A school board member is recovering after a drunk driver almost took her life.

Shelby County School Board member Stephanie Gatewood is counting her blessings as she speaks out for the first time since a car crash that nearly took her life.

It has been a long five months for Stephanie Gatewood.

"It does make you realize how important your life is," said Gatewood.

On January 19, a suspected drunk driver hit her as she was traveling near Poplar Avenue and East Parkway.

There was major damage to Gatewood's car and her body.

"My speech was impaired," she said. Because of the crash, Gatewood suffered a traumatic brain injury, causing a change in speech and memory.

The woman who hit her, 31-year-old Alicia Washington, was charged with DUI, reckless driving, and public intoxication.

Washington happens to be a Memphis attorney who specializes in personal injury cases. She told officers she had just left Club Senses when the accident happened.

Now, Gatewood's home is filled with get well cards from students.

She says her life is forever changed as she now has a renewed sense of purpose.

"Someone else has it a whole lot worse than you. Get over it. Make something great happen for someone else today," she said.

Stephanie Gatewood lost her job because of the crash but she is back to serving on the school board.

Meanwhile, Alicia Washington is due back in court on the DUI charges June 18.
