(WMC-TV) - Investigators are wondering if a high profile abduction case in Cleveland, where three women were found alive after 10 years, played a role in a Mid-South 9-year-old's fake abduction call.

Megan Richardson is one of many parents who live near Pope Elementary in Jackson, Tennessee worrying a man was on the loose abducting children.

"Now we know it's a hoax we feel a lot better," said Richardson.

Police said the 9-year-old Pope Elementary student made up a story because she stayed after school without permission and then started walking home.

Police said the 9-year-old girl told a wild tale about an Hispanic man in a red Honda who saw her waking down the road. He pulled her over, put his hand over her mouth, and pulled her into the back seat. A police car happened to pull up behind the man, and he got scared and let her out.

The girl was picked up by a teacher who saw her walking. She told that story to the teacher and her parents.

They called the police who into action. They arrested an Hispanic man and questioned him. He had a solid alibi.

Then the girl's story started falling apart when police questioned her.

Police charged the 9-year-old with filing a false report. She is scheduled to appear in Juvenile court.

"We're not looking for a harsh punishment. We more or less want her to take the matter seriously," said Jackson P.D. Lt. Tyreece Miller.
