Andy's Got Your Back on reshipping fraud

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Working from home could truly cost you if you get tangled up in the latest fraud scheme.

"Most of the victims are thinking they are doing it as a 'work at home' job and have no idea they are tied to any scam whatsoever," said U.S. Postal Inspector Stephanie Harden.

That is what the criminals want you to think. They usually target people looking for jobs on the Internet.

"Receive packages at their home, re-wrap them and send them usually overseas," said Harden.

It's called "reshipping fraud," and postal inspectors say many of these scams begin in Eastern Europe and Nigeria.

The goods include computers, cameras and other electronics usually bought with stolen credit cards.

"Credit card companies will contact local PD and say there is an address in your county receiving stolen property because the credit cards are no good," said Harden.

The person who thought they were just making an extra buck becomes part of a crime and can even be arrested.

Be suspicious of any offer that sounds too good to be true, especially those that do not pay a regular salary or involves working for an overseas company.
