Grizz fever causes grad headaches

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - As playoff mania sweeps Memphis, the Grizzlies' success is seen as a boon to the city.

But for some, it is an inconvenience.

The University of Memphis delayed today's graduation ceremony until Sunday - so the Grizz could play at FedExForum.

While Grizzlies fans support the U of M's graduation delay, the FedExForum takeover has others jumping through hoops.

Robin Mitchell booked a flight in March to see her son don his cap and gown.

But then, the Master of Finance grad got an email saying the graduation had been changed from Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

Mitchell and her family were supposed to fly home Sunday -- and flight change fees were only part of the inconvenience.

"It was a terrible inconvenience," Mitchell said. "Because Sunday is a travel day for people who work and must be back at work on Monday,"

She and her family had to scramble to get the day off.

The U of M Commencement Office sent a warning last year about possible changes.

"I understand the possibility, but Memphis is the sixth most expensive airport to fly into," Mitchell said. "If you find cheap tickets, you've got to grab them."

UofM grad Courtney Muldrow took it in stride when the Grizz made the playoffs in 2011.

"I just looked at it as a Mother's Day present for my mom," she said.

The UofM says the NBA sets the playoffs schedule and no other Memphis venue holds more than 2,300 students.

Mitchell calls this a recurring problem that needs a solution.

"It's just difficult to make your life plans around a possibility and a sports event when education is really more important," she said, laughing. "But I love the Grizzlies -- Go Grizzlies!"
