Memphis celebrates National Train Day

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) Railroads are a very important part of Memphis history.

Today crowds visited the Amtrak train station in downtown Memphis to celebrate National Train Day.

The Amtrak-sponsored event is held nationwide the second Saturday of every May to illustrate why trains are important to America.

The Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum tells the story of railroads in Memphis.

"More than anything Memphis is a railroad town. So trains are very important to Memphis and have been historically for 170 years," said Mike Fleming of the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum.

Visitors could tour an Amtrak train as well as Canadian and Santa Fe locomotives.

You don't have to wait until the next Train Day to learn about trains and trolleys: the museum is open every Friday through Sunday.
