When Panthers wide receiver Clenton Rafe went down weeks ago, Albany needed to bring in someone to help their depleted wideout corps.
They turned to rookie Johnny Lester, cousin of Panthers QB Cecil Lester.
So far it's worked out well for the Panthers. Lester has 5 touchdowns in his 3 games with the team.
"You know, my first year, I didn't really have any expectations," Johnny says. "But the more I got to play, it became easier."
Johnny credits his older cousin for his early success, saying the field general is continually giving him tips to improve.
"He stays in my ear," Johnny laughs. "Even when I think I'm doing right, he's stays on me and makes sure I'm doing it better."
"You have to represent the name on the back of your jersey well," Cecil jokes. "I just try to stay on him and kind of take him up under my wing."
This season is the first time the Lesters have played on the same team, so the connection you might expect between the two isn't there just yet.
But the cousins and Head Coach Lucious Davis can see it developing.
"As we've got to work together a lot more, now it's really ticking," Johnny says. "We're getting the timing down more."
"Cecil talks to him a lot about certain routes," Davis says. "He listens, and it's working out for him."
Now the Panthers hope this family connection will continue and turn into a championship one.
