MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Hundreds are without jobs after the Shelby County School Board passed budget exceeding $1 billion. The budget will be reached by cutting 300 teaching assistant positions and more than 100 full-time teaching positions.

School board commissioners say it was hard, but necessary to make the cuts to close the budget gap.

"And I think it's important that the residents in the county realize it wasn't a result of this merger," said Shelby County School Board Commissioner Chris Caldwell.

While the budget does eliminate hundreds of positions, it does reinstate 40 Pre-K classes. Originally 82 were expected to be cut.
