Man accused of attempting to kidnap 74-year-old woman appears in court

(WMC-TV) - The man accused of attempting to kidnap a 74-year-old woman remains behinds bars. Charles Hester made his first appearance in court Friday morning.

Hester, 50, is charged with attempting to rob and kidnap the woman at the Kroger on at this Kroger on Mendenhall Road on Tuesday.

He spoke to the judge via a video monitor from the jailhouse. He said he cannot afford to pay for an attorney.

Hester was arrested just two days after the incident.

Shopper L.T. Wilons heard the victim screaming so he followed Hester for seven blocks and was able to take a photo of him. It was a photo that was given to the media by the police department.

Hester's arraignment started on video and ended in the courtroom so the judge could begin the process of assigning him a public defender.

Hester also said he could not afford to post bond, so he remains in jail on charges of attempted aggravated kidnapping and attempted aggravated robbery.

He is due back in court May 31.

The man who snapped the photo of Hester says he has been bombarded with thanks from the victim, her family, and complete strangers. He says he is not a hero but was just doing what anyone else would do -- helping someone in need.
