MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Yellow tape flaps in the aftermath following a fire investigation that shut down an entire block of Nicholas Street for roughly 12 hours Monday.

Firefighters found a body after battling a house fire on 1417 Nicholas Street. Officials sent the body for an autopsy. It will determine if the man died in the fire, or if he died of something else altogether.

"Yeah, it was pretty loud. Woke us up," said resident Marie Jackson.

Firefighters said they found a man dead inside in the living room. It is still unclear how he died.

Fire investigators and Memphis Police Department crime scene crews are trying to figure it out.

Isaaca Brown, Marie Jackson, and all their toddlers live down the street from a scene that has them concerned.

"We just came down here to make sure it wasn't anybody we knew," said Jackson.

Investigators have yet to figure out how, or why, the fire started. As of Monday afternoon, they officially list the cause and origin as inconclusive.

Investigators have not released the identity of the man who died as of Monday. They are waiting to notify family members.
