(WMC-TV) - Seven Memphis motels were shut down Friday after the district attorney declared them public nuisances.

Investigators shut down the motels for renting out rooms illegally at "hourly rates".

From the window of a laundromat on Summer Avenue, attendant Denise Morris sees a lot of prostitution.

"There's a lot of stuff going on," she said. "Too much."

And the motel next door to the laundromat was the perfect place to seal the deal.

"We're not going to let business owners profit at the expense of public safety," said Shelby District Attorney Amy Wierich.

The Summer Motel, along with six others, were closed after a yearlong Organized Crime Unit investigation and a total of 350 crimes in and around all seven locations.

"For crimes ranging from forcible rape, aggravated assault, robbery, theft, narcotics, violations, prostitution, and criminal trespass," said Memphis Police Director Toney

Action News 5's Anna Marie Hartman spoke to the motel owner's son before police arrived.

"I heard a lot of them are going down, I don't understand why they're doing that," he said.

Here is a list of the hotels that were closed:

  • Memphis Inn, 4879 American Way
  • Southeast Motel, 3466 Lamar Avenue
  • Bellevue Inn, 1250 South Bellevue Boulevard
  • Rainbow Inn, 640 Breedlove Street
  • Airways Inn Motel, 2375 Airways Boulevard
  • Deluxe Inn Motel, 3733 Jackson Avenue
  • Summer Motel, 3025 Summer Avenue

"Business owners who encourage and allow criminal activity must be held accountable," said District Attorney General Amy Weirich. "We are not going to sit back and allow them to make a profit at the expense of public safety."

The owners have to appear in court May 28 to explain why they should be allowed to reopen.
