MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – Memphis Firefighters Association President Thomas Malone aims his verbal venom directly at city hall in a newly posted YouTube video.
"We're under attack," he says in the video. "We're tired of being the rug they walk on."
Malone recorded the video after receiving new information about proposed benefit cuts and layoffs in the forthcoming city budget. He even compares what he sees as the administration's non-negotiable rule to life in the "Old South".
"I guess that they want the plantation mentality," said Malone in the video.
"There's so much history connected to that," said Memphian Melody Gordon.
Gordon said there are better ways to make a point.
"I'm not sure if I would particularly say that," added Gordon.
"America is obviously a free country and everybody has an opportunity to express themselves," said City of Memphis Chief Administrative Officer George Little.
He did not directly react to Malone's remarks. However, Little said firefighter frustrations over pay and budget cuts have been heard.
"We recognize that behind every statistic there's a real person," said Little. "We get that."
But, at the end of the day, Little said the budget must be balanced while being as politically feasible as possible and in spite of the criticism.
"It's part of governing," said Little.
The council will receive Mayor A C Wharton's latest budget proposal on Tuesday. The union hopes to have more than 100 people on hand.
