Grandmother holding baby killed when truck hit garage

(WMC-TV) - A grandmother is dead after a car crashed into her open garage, pinning her between two vehicles as she held her grand baby.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Monday on the 4000 block of Tutwiler Avenue in East Memphis

According to police, the driver lost control of the truck sending it on a destructive path. The truck jumped a curb, hopped into a cement barrier, ended up back on the sidewalk, crossed two lanes of traffic, went through two lawns, a fence, a median, and straight into the garage.

Meihua Liu, 69, was pronounced dead on the scene. According to a neighbor who ran to help, the 6-month-old Liu was holding was not injured.

Liu's husband was on the scene, inconsolable, as he mourned her death.

"It's just horrifying," said Belle Carol, who lives nearby. "It's just you know, just something that you can't really comprehend."

"I get to know the people on my route," said the woman's mail carrier, Brenda Walker. "And it's just so sad. I miss her and God bless the family."

Police say they are still investigating what sent the truck out of control and why the driver could not stop, but neighbors say Tutwiler Avenue has turned into a racetrack.

"We need to do something about the speeding," said Deborah Armstrong, who lives on the street. "They fly over this hill. I've seen four accidents on this hill since I've lived here."

The neighborhood is jarred by the unthinkable sequence of events.

"You just don't expect to get up one morning and you're doing your general activities and then have such a horrible accident happen," added Carol.

The driver of the pick-up truck went to the hospital but is expected to be OK. No charges have been filed at this point.
