Former College of Charleston left-handed pitcher Jake Zokan has signed a professional contract to play with the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League.
Hailing from Columbia, S.C., Zokan was drafted by the Mariners in the ninth round of last weekend's MLB Entry Draft. He becomes the 19th player under CofC head coach Monte Lee to sign a professional contract at the end of their collegiate career.
Zokan led the Cougars pitching staff in 2013 with a 2.85 ERA and a 4-3 record. He recorded a team-high 80 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched and allowed just 15 walks. His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.33 ranked 32nd in the nation and second in the SoCon behind teammate Matt Pegler.
Bolstered by Zokan's efforts in the starting rotation, the Cougar pitching staff led the Southern Conference in ERA (2.40), opposing batting average (.264) and fewest walks allowed (167).
Zokan finished his career with an ERA of 3.95 and an 11-6 record.
