Registration for Pre-K kicks off today

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Pre-Kindergarten registration has just begun for the new unified school district. Parents can register their children for Pre-K through June 27.

Parents registering their children at Millington Elementary School Tuesday were greeted with long lines. Millington Elementary was the first school designated as a registration site.

Stacey Pelkey's 4-year-old is all registered and ready to begin.

"When we heard this was going on, I jumped up and said, 'I need to take off work and come do this,'" she said.

Pelkey and her boys drove all the way from Cordova to get pre-screened and registered.

At first, state leaders cut Pre-K funding, but soon added some back when they realized the importance of the program.

Now, it is up to parents to get their kids signed up.

"It's a big responsibility to them to make sure they come and apply because they have limited spots," said Donna Jones, Pre-K supervisor.

To register, parents need to bring proof of income, a certified birth certificate, plus one copy, two proofs of residency, the child's social security number plus one copy, and the child's health and immunization records.

Stacey Pelkey says she is glad the state added more funding but she is a bit nervous about the first year of the unified school district.
