(WMC-TV) - A 10-vehicle pileup killed two people and injured at least five others early Thursday morning, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Investigators said some of vehicles involved in the crash were headed to the popular music festival, Bonnaroo. A witness traveling with the victims told a Nashville television station the two occupants who were killed were on the way to Bonnaroo. Officials have not released the names of the individuals killed, but said they were from out of the state.

Officials said around midnight a tractor-trailer, operated by H & O Transport of Campbellsville, KY, could not stop.

Two vehicles burst into flames, trapping people inside their vehicles.

Deputies responded to the scene and pulled two people out of one car. They could not get to the others in time. Two vehicles became trapped under the two tractor-trailers.

At least eight vehicles and two tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, according to THP.

"They got their fire extinguishers out. The trooper and the sheriff's deputy were able to get that fire put out and rescue those two victims," said Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold.

Three people who were hurt had to be taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. One other was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt.

By 10 a.m., one person was in surgery, one person was in stable condition, and two were treated and released.

The at-fault truck driver has been cited for failure to exercise due care. Additional charges are pending at this time, but no one has been arrested.
