(WMC-TV) - Hundreds of Memphis teachers put on their interview clothes and freshened up their resumes for a job fair at Colonial Middle School Thursday.

Around 800 teachers remain on the district's excess list. Meaning as of now they do not have a job to return to in August, unless they get a job within the unified district.

People who were in the classrooms teaching less than a month ago are now classified as excessed for their school. Many hope they are selected to fill one of the vacancies within the unified district.

The district has 267 open positions.

"I've been able to look and see what jobs I can apply for. There is only one I can apply for today," said excessed teacher Dan Davis.

Davis said he is not optimistic.

After this job fair, he plans to look for non-teaching jobs to make sure he is employed by August – even if not with the district.

The teachers all arrived dressed for their interviews, masking the outrage several would only share in off-camera interviews.

Davis understands why he was cut. He is a music teacher, a field that often gets eliminated in tough budget times. Still, he explained some of the concern he hears from other teachers.

"My peers ... There's a lot of outrage because of how it happened," he said. "Seniority was thrown out. Tenure was thrown out in the process of merging."

Excessed teachers will have the opportunity to apply for the open unified district positions through the summer. The teachers union, Memphis Education Association, has filed an injunction in federal court to stop the hiring process.

They hope for a ruling no later than June 30.
