Police urge teens to sign up for driver awareness class

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Metro Police Department is taking applications for their free teenage driver awareness classes.

Saturday's class, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is already filled up, but Metro teens can still sign up for future classes.

The course takes place at the Metro Southeast Complex located at 1417 Murfreesboro Pk., which is behind Genesco.

Classes are open to ages 14-18.

The class is taught by Nashville police officers, but does not offer behind-the-wheel training. However, the course focuses on impaired driving, distracted driving and overall traffic safety.

Parents interested in signing up their teens for this program should contact Officer Erika Bowden at Erika.Bowden@nashville.gov and provide the following information:

  • Teen's name
  • Teen's date of birth
  • Home address
  • School attended
  • Parent's telephone number
  • Parent's email address

Enrollment in the classes are limited, but applicants are placed on a waiting list for a subsequent class.

Saturday's event is the 18th Teenage Driver Awareness Class conducted by the MNPD since the program began in 2011.
