Big night for charities downtown

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – It was a big night in downtown Memphis, famous faces, worthy causes and a celebration of America's favorite pastime. There was something for everyone in downtown Memphis Saturday night.

Thousands of people gathered downtown for two major events benefiting great causes just before 7 o'clock. Fans and followers of Tim Tebow filed into FedEx forum.

Danielle Logston said, "Because he's like my hero."

Tebow was speaking at Agape's Heartlight 2013.

Tebow fan Christopher Goodwin said "I'd tell him I was a huge Florida fan and I hope to be like you because you're a great Christian athlete."

The event benefits Agape Child & Family Services. Their goal Saturday night was to bring awareness of homelessness, orphan care and under-resourced communities in Memphis.

David Jordon from Agape Means Love group said, "The cause in his heart that really connects us to him is really around orphan-care, around the fatherless, around impoverished community. So his foundation and a number of his causes really connect there so that makes sense as well."

But just around the corner on Beale Street thousands more gathered for the Gibson 5K benefiting St. Patrick's Community Outreach.

Gibson 5K participant Gene Carter said, "Memphis is coming alive and I tell you what Gibson Guitar 5K is a fine race."

Carter is running his 92nd race with Paul Applebee, their first since the Boston Marathon; happy with the spotlight on downtown Memphis.

Everyone downtown Saturday was happy to see positive things happening in their city.

Runner Mandy Polk said, "There's this whole revival of everything downtown. It doesn't necessarily involve night life."

Tim Tebow fan Merrly Nall said, "For us it's awesome to see all the great things that Memphis is starting to do now. It's neat to see the city coming into its own."

Autozone Park provided another option for families Saturday night by hosting a screening of the movie Sandlot.
