Juneteenth event celebrates freedom

(WMC-TV) – It was a weekend to celebrate freedom in Memphis. The Juneteenth celebration at Douglass Park provided fun for the whole family.

It wrapped up Sunday evening after a day of praise. The festival celebrates the official end to slavery on June 19th 1865, more than 2 years after the emancipation proclamation was signed when all slaves got the message that they were free.

"It's not just about a North Memphis thing it's not just isolated event. This is an entire Memphis event and we would love Memphis to embrace Juneteenth because we all are free," said festival director Talisa Franklin.

The Juneteenth Freedom and Heritage festival is 20 years old this year.
