MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The animal abuse trial against a former Memphis Animal Services employee is expected to start Monday.

Demetria Hogan was indicted on misconduct, forgery, and cruelty charges last year.

The charges stem from the disappearance of an 11-year-old pit bull named Kapone back in 2011. Witnesses say Hogan picked up Kapone, along with another dog, after they escaped from a backyard. When the dogs' owner went to pick up the dogs, Kapone was nowhere to be found. Records later indicated only the other dog had been processed at the shelter.

Kapone was missing for months before he was discovered at a home in Senatobia, Mississippi.

According to the Memphis Police Department, between June 23 and July 1, 2011, Hogan failed to perform her duties, abused her authority, and made false entries on official records when she stole the dog from the shelter.

A second investigation indicated that Hogan failing to do her job resulted in the death of a stray dog in her care.

If convicted on the charges, Hogan faces up to six years behind bars.
